New Chair of Council for the University of Sussex

At a meeting last Friday (26 April), the governing body of the University of Sussex appointed Chris Brodie as its new Chair, for three years from 1 August 2013.

Chair of Council, Chris BrodieAs announced at the end of January, the current Chair of Council, Simon Fanshawe, is retiring when his second term of office ends in July.

Mr Brodie first became associated with the University of Sussex as a member of the audit committee. He has been an independent member of Council since 2009 and its Vice-Chair (Finance) since 2011.

The Council has responsibility for the University’s ongoing strategic direction as well as for the management of its finances, property, investments and general business. It approves major developments, ensures proper accountability and receives regular reports on day-to-day operations.

Independent members make up the majority of the Council.

Mr Brodie, a qualified lawyer, is one of two Vice Chairmen of UBS Investment Bank and a Business Group Vice Chairman of UBS AG.

He holds a number of non-executive positions, including the role of Chair of the Chelsea and Westminster Health Charity, an NHS charity associated with the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. He is married to Dr Geraldine Brodie, who researches and teaches in Translation Studies at University College London.

Mr Brodie said: “It’s a great honour to chosen as the next Chair of Council, and I look forward with eager anticipation to playing an active role in the continuing development of the University of Sussex.

“Over the last four years I have gained an understanding of the University, its strengths and distinctiveness and the opportunities and challenges that it faces in implementing its strategic plan of growth and development.

“I have also developed a great affection and admiration for the University and the people associated with it.”

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Michael Farthing, said: “I am delighted that Chris has accepted the position of Chair of Council and I look forward to working with him.

“He brings a broad range of business knowledge and governance expertise to the University, gained throughout his high-profile career.

“The range of contacts that he will bring to the position will reap benefits for the University, as will his proven commitment to Sussex.”
