Staff and students prepare for marathon challenge

Twenty-eight runners from the University of Sussex are in the final weeks of training for next month’s Brighton Marathon.

Three of them - Biochemistry undergraduate Chris Florey, Dr Florian Kern (a lecturer in SPRU) and Business and Management student Connor Davies  - will be raising funds for the Sussex Fund in the event on 15 April.

The Sussex Fund helps students with financial difficulties, offers scholarships and supports other activities to enrich the student experience on campus. If you would like to sponsor the trio, visit www.justgiving.com/university-sussex

Meanwhile, 18 other students and staff are running the Marathon to raise funds for the Bhopal Medical Appeal, a Brighton-based charity that supports two free clinics for survivors of the 1984 Bhopal gas disaster.

Half of the group are undergraduates: Tatsu Asamatsu ‎(International Relations), Andina Brown (Economics), Kieran Chappell (Economics), Jack Evans (Economics), William Grace ‎(Geography), Emma Higbee (Language Studies), Ed Mann (Geography), Justin Mears ‎(Media and Film) and Nikola Wells (Psychology).

Five postgraduates - Tim Carter (Philosophy), Viola Giuliano (International Relations), Mat Homewood (History), Veronica Panero (International Relations) and Alex Pfefferle ‎(International Relations) - are also taking part.

And completing the team are staff members Dr Andrew Chitty (Philosophy), Professor Alan Garnham (Psychology), Simon Ho (Finance) and Jackie Rymell (Human Resources).

Three good causes will benefit from the efforts of Sussexsport staff:

  • Terry Cooper, Health and Fitness Development Officer, is running for Alzheimers

Sussex also has four other runners in the Marathon:

  • Not content with running the Brighton Marathon to raise money for the NSPCC and Winstons Wish (a charity for bereaved children), Brigitte Groves is adding the London to Brighton 100k on 13 May and the Windermere Marathon on 20 May.   • Third-year Psychology undergraduate Joanna Taylor is running the Brighton and possibly the London Marathon too (if she finishes her dissertation in time).
