World première for Sussex grad at BBC Proms

A new composition by a Sussex music alumnus received its world première at the BBC Proms last week and was broadcast live on BBC Radio 3.

Fung LamBBC Radio 3 commissionFung Lam, who completed his doctorate in Music Composition in May this year, was commissioned to write a piece for the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

And the nine-minute work, Endless Forms, was performed for the first time on 18 July, as part of the annual BBC Proms in London’s Royal Albert Hall.

Fung Lam is a Proms first-timer but this was his third commission from the BBC.

He said: “Endless Forms was inspired by the last sentence of Charles Darwin's The Origin of Species, and celebrates the insight into the diversity of life.

“The title also relates to Buddhism's view of life as endless cycles of forms: birth, death, rebirth.”
