Two academics are to join Sussex as Royal Society University Research Fellows (URFs). Physicist Dr Christian Byrnes and geneticist Dr Edward Morrow are among 40 new URFs for 2011, announced on 8 November by the Royal Society, the UK’s national academy of science. The "extremely competitive" Royal Society scheme aims to provide outstanding scientists, who have the potential to become leaders in their chosen fields, with the opportunity to build an independent research career.

Dr Jarod Roll, Senior Lecturer in American History, has won the 2011 Missouri History Book Award for his book, Spirit of Rebellion: Labor and religion in the new cotton south. Dr Roll received the award from the State Historical Society of Missouri at a ceremony in Columbia, Missouri on 5 November. Spirit of Rebellion has won Dr Roll two other prizes: the C. L. R. James Prize from the Working Class Studies Association and the Herbert G. Gutman Prize from the Labor and Working-Class History Association.
