Students and staff to benefit from new agreement with Santander

An agreement with global bank Santander worth £150,000 over three years will benefit students, researchers and young entrepreneurs at Sussex.

Santander UniversitiesThe Vice-Chancellor, Professor Michael Farthing, signed the agreement yesterday (Thursday 15 December) with Luis Juste, Director of Santander Universities UK. 

With a focus on international exchange and the mobility of students and researchers within the network,Santander Universities Global Division will fund four scholarships, each of £5,000, to overseas students from the USA, China, Brazil, Chile and Mexico. 

In addition, ten Santander Mobility Awards will support faculty and students taking part in academic exchanges, as well as participation in conferences and symposia. 

The agreement will also provide five Santander Junior Entrepreneurship Associate Bursaries a year of £2,000 each to final-year master’s and doctoral students who have shown promising entrepreneurial talent. 

Professor Farthing said: “Internationalism is already one of our strengths, and this agreement will help to build on our world-class reputation in research, as well as attracting some of the most talented overseas students. 

“I am also delighted to see the support this partnership will give to our entrepreneurs, whose energy and ideas are becoming vital in our increasingly complex economy.” 

Luis Juste said: “This long-term partnership with Sussex means that the university will benefit from extensive contacts in the countries whereSantander Universities is present. 

“Students and staff will have access to scholarships and grants that will allow them to take their studies and research one step further. 

“We look forward to working together in promoting international collaboration and the exchange of knowledge in Sussex’s areas of expertise.” 

Santander, through its Santander Universities Global Division, began its alliance with universities in 1996; since then the bank has signed 979 agreements in 15 countries, including China, Brazil, Mexico, and the USA. In the UK the network began its activity in 2007 and today 54 universities are now members.
