Intensive leadership training for Sussex students

Thirty Sussex students will today (Friday 16 December) complete an intensive week of leadership training.

The Careers and Employability Centre have teamed up for a third year with an international management-training consultancy, Clemorton, to deliver the Learning to Lead programme. 

Competition for a place on the programme has doubled in 2011, with more than 200 applications. 

The 30 selected students will have the opportunity to develop an understanding of the skills and techniques of leadership, management and policy research and to develop a Sussex Plus webfolio to articulate their personal skill development. 

Working with Sussex alumni, they will also explore and test out ways of making an effective contribution to policy research and evidence-based debate on an issue linked to one of the six Sussex research themes. 

This exercise will culminate in March 2012, when the students present a policy proposal to a panel of academic and business leaders chaired by Professor Bob Allison, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research). 

At the Learning to Lead launch event on 5 December in the Careers and Employability Centre, the 30 successful students met Stuart Maddocks, a leadership trainer from Clemorton Consultancy, and heard about the challenges of the intensive week’s programme. 

Guest speaker Lisa Rodrigues, Sussex alumna and Chief Executive of the Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, described life-long learning as a driving force in her life. 

She outlined nine leadership lessons based on her experience. These included Henry Ford’s saying, “The harder you work, the luckier you get”; the benefit of focusing on three important things and doing them well; and the importance of “speaking truth to power” (i.e. the courage to speak frankly to more senior managers). 

Linda Buckham, Director of the Careers and Employability Centre, said: “I am delighted with the high calibre of the successful students this year. 

“We will be organising a Saturday leadership workshop on 25 February 2012, providing another opportunity for Sussex students to develop their skills.”
