Sussex sets 2012 PG fees in line with inflation

The University of Sussex has set its postgraduate fees for home and EU students for 2012 in line with inflation. The fee for standard taught postgraduate programmes will rise by 5% from £4,700 in 2011-12 to £4,950 in 2012-13.

The Director of Finance, Allan Spencer said: “Postgraduate education is a vital part of life at Sussex – with over 3,000 postgraduate students on campus.  In light of massive funding changes for higher education generally, government funding in relation to postgraduate programmes remains uncertain.”

“We have looked very carefully at this, and decided that we are right to take a cautious approach in the short term.  We judged that the prudent approach now for 2012 was to increase fees for home and EU students for our postgraduate programmes only in line with inflation.”

In summer 2011 the University set its undergraduate fees for 2012 in the context of a massively changed funding system, with government cuts of 80% for teaching programmes shifting the burden of the costs of university from taxpayers to graduates.

With undergraduate fees increasing across the sector to £9,000 a year for 2012, there had been concerns that postgraduate fees would be set at similar or higher levels.

The detail of the fees for each specific postgraduate programme at Sussex will be published in the online prospectus by 15 November.
