More bike stands on campus

New bicycle stands have been installed on campus to provide more parking for cyclists.

The Transport Manager, Chris Wadey, says: “It had become clear over the last few weeks that cycle use on campus has risen considerably.

“We welcome this and wanted to install as many stands as needed to make the campus more bike and pedestrian friendly.

“So we undertook a full review of how many cycle racks we already had and where they are, and agreed with the Students’ Union where new facilities would most usefully be located.”

The 75 new stands are outside Shawcross, Chichester 1, Pevensey undercroft, Falmer House and Silverstone.

Chris says: “Now the new racks have been installed we will undertake another review to ensure that we have enough safe storage facilities for cycle users.

“Parking at illegal spots such as railings can really get in the way of people with disabilities. So please help to keep the paths clear and use the bike stands instead.”

Chris also urges all cyclists - for reasons of safety – to use only marked campus cycle routes. He says: “Cyclists should not (in particular) ride either way on the pedestrian routes from Arts A via Library Square and through Falmer House courtyard to the front of campus.”
