Marathon efforts from Sussex staff and students

Seventeen students and staff completed the Brighton Marathon on 15 April to raise funds for the Bhopal Medical Appeal, a Brighton-based charity that supports two free clinics for survivors of the 1984 Bhopal gas disaster.

Marathon runners for BhopalJackie Rymell from Human Resources has run the Brighton Marathon every year since it started in 2010. She said: “It really was a great team - bringing together staff, postgraduate students and undergraduates from across the University.

“It was a fantastic achievement by all, but especially the students who were running their first ever marathon, and finished with excellent times.”

Two other runners took part in the Brighton Marathon to raise money for the Sussex Fund.

Dr Florian Kern (a lecturer in SPRU) and Business and Management student Connor Davies both finished the run around the 4-hour mark and have raised about £1,000 for the Sussex Fund.

The Sussex Fund gives help and support to students who find themselves in unexpected financial difficulties, offers scholarships to attract the brightest minds, and supports activities that enrich the student experience on campus.

About a third of the £1,000 total was raised by Sara Hinchliffe (School Manager, School of Life Sciences), who was unable to take part due to injury, but whose donors still wanted to support the Fund.
