Mantell car park now open
The new Mantell car park (no. 6) is now open. The entrance is at the top of Boiler House Hill.

Road resurfacing
There will be major resurfacing works on campus roads for two weeks from 15 August. The roads affected are Knights Gate Road, Southern Ring Road and North-South Road.

New DoGS in SI
Dr Paul Yates will be the new Director of Graduate Studies in the Sussex Institute (SI) for two years from 1 August.

Temple Cup
A staff team came joint second overall in the annual Temple Cup, which took place on 13 July. Sussex competed against Legal & General, American Express and Southern Water/Four Delivery in squash, netball, rounders, darts, pool and football. "The event was a great success," said Simon Tunley, Deputy Head of Sport. It has already been booked in for 12 July next year, so put the date in your diary if you're interested in playing.

Sussex graduate to head Oxford college
Sussex alumnus David Clary FRS, Professor of Chemistry at Oxford, will be the new President of Magdalen College, Oxford, from 1 September. Professor Clary completed a BSc in Theoretical Chemistry at Sussex in 1974.

The story of the West Pier
CCE local historian Geoffrey Mead has contributed to a BBC Radio 4 programme about Brighton's West Pier. 'Oh What a Lovely Pier!' is scheduled for broadcast on Saturday 13 August at 8pm. The programme, which is part of the 'Archive Hour' series, will chart the rich cultural history of the pier from its heyday 140 years ago to its survival of two world wars and endless battles with the elements. The pier eventually fell victim to storms and vandals and in June 2004 its famous convert hall collapsed into the sea.
