New scheme aids re-use of unwanted office furniture

Next Article | Contents

A new online system will help to keep old desks, chairs and office equipment out of landfill sites.

Estates and IT Services have got together to create a web portal, where staff who are responsible for furniture budgets can dispose of items that are no longer needed in their school or unit but still have some life left in them.

The reUSe system, which is managed through Sussex Direct, also allows budget holders to make a request for items.

When equipment is re-used across campus in this way, it means that less money will be spent on new items – keeping costs down and reducing the University's carbon footprint. There will also be a saving on disposal costs.

Rachael Adari, Support Services Manager in Estates, says: "This is an opportunity for staff to demonstrate their commitment to the environment, reducing furniture miles, energy usage and the amount of waste that is sent to landfill.

"Feedback will be welcomed and suggestions for improvements encouraged. Let's share our resources."

Any items of furniture that are not re-used on campus will be offered to local charities.

The scheme is for campus use only, items cannot be taken home for personal use and personal items cannot be advertised.

The ReUSe scheme does not cover computer equipment; this is managed separately by IT Services.

For more information about the new scheme and a list of the key staff who will be using the online system, refer to the EFM ReUse Scheme pages.
