Teaching is never 'normal'

Next Article | Contents

A new Study Direct site, developed by the Teaching and Learning Development Unit (TLDU) and the Student Support Unit, has been launched this week to help staff teach more inclusively.

All teaching staff are being sent a mouse mat printed with the initiative's slogan 'There's no such thing as normal' and the web address www.sussex.ac.uk/inclusive

Gill Johnston, Head of TLDU, said that the purpose of the initiative is to strive for equality of opportunity and participation for all students. She said: "Sussex students are an increasingly diverse bunch - each one an individual with their own history, concerns and approach to studying - so it can be a real challenge finding a way to teach that meets everyone's needs.

"In the past there was an emphasis solely on making specific adjustments to 'normal' teaching for students with particular needs, but the aim now is to adopt more varied teaching strategies that enable all students to learn effectively as far as possible, thereby meeting a broader range of needs.

"We want all our students to really feel that they belong here."

Abi Brook, Equality and Diversity Co-ordinator, said: "The new site offers a wide selection of resources and tools that will help staff to make their teaching more inclusive and accessible. The result will be a better learning experience for all students."

Visit www.sussex.ac.uk/inclusive for more information about inclusive teaching at Sussex, and to access the Study Direct site.
