Dr Julian Burke (BIOLS) has become Chair of the BBSRC Genes and Development Committee and is on the BBSRC Strategy Board. Over 250 applications were made to the Leverhulme Trust for its Major Research Fellowship scheme (funding two or three years' research leave). Only 20 awards have been made, one of them to Professor Larry Trask (COGS) for an etymological dictionary of Basque. Professor Michael O'Shea (BIOLS) has been appointed to the Review Panel for the BBSRC's 'Neurone Initiative' and to the joint EPSRC-BBSRC Panel for 'Adaptive Behaviour in Animals and Artificial Systems'. Student prize-winners in BIOLS include David Booth and Sarah Long, awarded the Ede and Ravenscroft Prize for this year. Gareth Williams is the first recipient of the Tom Roberts Memorial Prize. Prizes have also been awarded to Christian Heichinger, Samantha Holmes, Alan Leroux, and Jason Thompson. The Geoff Lockwood Scholarship for 2000 was awarded to Kate Rowlandson, an MSc student of experimental psychology.
