Sarah Birchmore, Research Development Officer in Research and Enterprise Services, died on 1 March.

Sarah passed away peacefully at the Royal Sussex County Hospital after several months of illness, which had developed rapidly after a short phased return to work in autumn 2009.

Sarah, who lived in Brighton, had worked at the University for a total of six years (2004-10). Latterly (from December 2008), she worked in Research and Enterprise Services supporting the Brighton and Sussex Medical School.

Head of Research Development, Rossana Dowsett, said: “Sarah was a popular member of staff who will be missed greatly by those who worked with her. She fitted in very quickly and was a great asset in the team. We are all deeply saddened by her death.”

Prior to working in Research and Enterprise, Sarah worked in SPRU - Science and Technology Policy Research.

Fiona Marshall, who worked closely with Sarah during her five years there, said: "Sarah was dedicated to SPRU and was much liked and well respected. She worked very effectively and with good humour under pressure and had a great talent for strategic thinking.

“She was always very professional, a team builder, who was willing to help in any way she could. We will all sorely miss her."

Sarah's funeral is today (Friday) at the Woodvale crematorium. She requested that any donations should be made to the Royal Marsden Cancer Campaign: www.royalmarsden.org/Campaign/Donate/
