Research funding opportunities

The Wellcome Trust's Showcase scheme encourages "high-risk" research proposals in the biomedical sciences. Innovative, speculative and adventurous proposals are invited. Applications should be made on-line. Deadline: 28 October 1999

The Royal Society is inviting applications to its research grants scheme. Grants of up to £10,000 are available for research projects in the natural sciences, including mathematics, engineering science and medical research, the scientific aspects of geography, experimental psychology and the history of science, technology or medicine. Deadline: 1 November 1999

The Leverhulme Trust is inviting applications for its Research Fellowships and Grants scheme. Grants provide research expenses over and above normal living costs; Fellowships are open to those needing to devote a period of full-time endeavour to research. Both are tenable for between three and 24 months. Deadline: 11 November 1999

The British Academy's small personal research grants scheme awards up to £5,000 for research in the humanities and social sciences. The award is to cover the direct expenses, i.e. travel, accommodation, research & secretarial assistance, etc. Next deadline: 20 November 1999

The EPSRC is inviting applications for funding to help establish networks which bring together researchers from different disciplines to develop ideas for research into system theory. The call is supported by the Council's programmes for IT and computer science, engineering and mathematics, but networks may also include other disciplines, especially biology and sociology. Grants of up to £50,000 will be made. Deadline: 17 December 1999

The BBSRC is inviting applications for a new grants scheme to promote public understanding of science. The scheme will provide grants up to £10,000 to support development of resources such as website and multimedia presentations, publications, presentation packages for public talks and demonstration kits. Deadline: 31 December 1999

Wingate Scholarships are awarded to individuals who are unlikely to attract major agency funding for their projects. Research is to be of intellectual, scientific, artistic, social or environmental value. The average total award is about £6,500. Deadline: 1 February 2000

The Royal Academy of Engineering has an international travel grant scheme. Awards may be sought for attendance at conferences and for visits to research institutions and industrial sites. Visits can be made for a period of up to two months. No deadline
