Students go back to schoolVice-Chancellor Professor Alasdair Smith presented certificates yesterday (Thursday) to 60 students who have been acting as tutors or mentors in local primary and secondary schools. Tutors spend some time each week in a classroom situation, assisting teachers and actively participating in lessons. Mentors, on the other hand, work with a small group of pupils who may be having problems at school. Acting as an inspirational role-model, they often see an upsurge in pupils' interest, attendance and motivation. Each participant committed themselves to a 10-week placement at a school in Brighton, Hove or Lewes, but many got so much out of their involvement that they carried on after the initial period - and some were taking part in the scheme for the second year running. Sussex launches Graduate Assistantship schemeThe University is introducing a number of Graduate Assistantships for suitably qualified candidates to undertake full-time research (MPhil or DPhil) starting in October 2000. The Assistantships are at least equal in value to a Home/EU fee waiver. Many research groups are in the scheme. In some cases research areas are specified; in others, all proposals will be considered. See www.sussex.ac.uk/USIS/news/gradasst.shtml for further information. IDS book sale for MozambiqueThe recent IDS book sale to raise funds for the flood victims of Mozambique totalled £1,010. IDS wishes to thank all those who kindly donated books and supported the sale on the day. Useful websitesThe last issue of the Bulletin (10 March) reported on changes to the University's directory enquiries system. Several people contacted Bob Stephenson, Communications Manager, to inform him that a directory enquiries service is also available on the web, at www.bt.com/phonenetuk. Other useful websites include a directory of postal codes available at www.royalmail.co.uk/PAF and a street-map at www.streetmap.co.uk.
