Sun shines on graduation ceremonies
The sun has been shining this week on more than 2,700 Sussex students, representing nearly 90 countries, who have been conferred with degrees and diplomas at no fewer than seven graduation ceremonies.

The graduating students at the Brighton Dome included:
Tuesday 9 July
- Florence Mowlem, whose Psychology undergraduate project on how medicines affect thinking processes led to her work being published in a prestigious academic journal
- Emma Craig, whose degree in Psychology included an outstanding project about children’s language development
Wednesday 10 July
- Kim Novis, whose personally inspired project for her degree in Biomedical Science has now been taken up by a London hospital trust
- Joy Askew, whose impressive research during an industrial placement at Procter & Gamble during her Biochemistry degree led to the company giving her a job recommendation
Thursday 11 July
- Nathan Green, who spent the summer vacation of his History degree as a volunteer football coach in Rwanda
Friday 12 July
- Osvaldo Urzua, whose Science and Technology Policy doctoral thesis about the development of more innovative supplier firms for mining operations in developing countries has already made a major contribution to the industry and received international praise
And there was a surprise for one of the robed dignitaries on the stage at the ceremony on Thursday morning (11 July): the outgoing Chair of Council (the University’s governing body), Simon Fanshawe, received an honorary degree.
Mr Fanshawe, who has been an independent member of Council since 2001 and Chair since 2007, is retiring when his second term of office ends on 31 July.
