New guide celebrates Brighton & Hove’s architectural gems
A University of Sussex academic has designed and compiled a new guide to celebrate Brighton & Hove's architecture, both past and present.

Geographer Dr Geoffrey Mead, a tutor at Sussex, has produced the leaflet for Explore Living, the developer of the Grand Ocean apartments in a former Saltdean hotel.
The self-guided tour takes visitors on an architectural journey westwards from Saltdean along the seafront to Shoreham harbour, via Rottingdean, Roedean, Kemp Town, the 19th-century hotels after Brighton Pier, and Regency Hove. The emphasis of the tour is on interwar building styles.
Dr Mead says: “Ever since the Prince Regent built his extravagant Pavilion, Brighton has been proud to be seen at the forefront of architectural design.
“This tour of the major architectural landmarks of Brighton covers all of the buildings you’ll know but also many that you don’t.”
Dr Mead has spent a lifetime discovering the landscape and history of Brighton, Hove and Sussex and his 2012 doctoral thesis – supervised by Professors Brian Short and Alun Howkins – looked at interwar housing in the Brighton suburb of Patcham.
Copies of the free guides are available from Sussex House on campus and at the tourist information office next to the Royal Pavilion. You can get a flavour of the tour by watching Meridian TV’s news item about the new leaflet.
