Formula Student is an international competition, run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), which challenges university students to design, build, develop, and compete as a team with a single-seat racing car.

Team Sussex ranked second highest in the UK, 14th overall, in the endurance event, which involves a race over 22km in distance including one driver change.

As part of the competition, the car, driven by Team Leader, Matthew Mammana, and Vehicle Integration Team Leader, Matthew Hamer, was also judged in a number of other categories, including cost and sustainability, design, and fuel efficiency.

More than 100 other teams took part in the annual competition, which was held at the Silverstone motor racing circuit in Northamptonshire last weekend (3-7 July).

Team Sussex consists of a diverse combination of both third- and fourth-year automotive, mechanical and electrical engineering students, as well as a small number of product designers and media students. The team has grown in popularity over the last 12 months with nearly 50 students involved in this year’s project compared to just 27 in 2012.
