University launches online access guide for disabled users

An online guide that provides detailed information about disabled access to University buildings is now available.

Disabled car parking space (outside Arundel building)The University has been working in conjunction with DisabledGo, an award-winning disability organisation, to develop the access guide for all venues on campus, such as teaching and research buildings, the Library, University accommodation, cafes and bars, and Sussexsport facilities.

The guide, which can be found on the University’s campus and facilities webpages, provides details relating to physical access into and around each University building for disabled users. This includes level access and automatic doors, access by ramps and slopes, as well as stair access for mobility impaired walkers.

The guide also offers information about such facilities as car parking, access to toilets and changing rooms, and whether staff working in a particular building receive disability awareness and equality training.

Speaking about the need to encourage equality and diversity at the University, Professor Michael Farthing, Vice-Chancellor, said: “It is essential to create an inclusive environment where everyone is given the opportunity to realise their full potential.”

DisabledGo, which has been in operation since 2000, is one of the largest disability organisations in Europe. It provides online access guides to a huge range of venues in the UK and Ireland, allowing individuals to determine the suitability of a building according to their disability.

The information provided in the online access guide for the University is based on the survey work of DisabledGo, who visited each of the buildings on campus.
