Tracing the evolution of a co-authored text

Lydia Plowman

In this paper I introduce a method for tracing the evolution of a co-authored document from idea generation through to completion. Notes and drafts are external representations of internal cognitive processes which have to be articulated for the group. These act as a focus for discussion, leading to the notes being transformed into a draft and subsequently embodied in the final text. Such a process provides a demonstration of how cognition can be distributed within a group of co-authors by means of these spoken and graphical representations.
