This lecture, to a lay audience, deals with the question of what might constitute "inheritance". If languages cannot be shown to have a single common origin, universals (unless arising by chance) need to be explained by an amalgam of linguistic, psychological, anthropological and praxiological factors, which are discussed in outline. The cultural and psychological inheritance of language is further discussed, and reasons for conservation or change of the language of our forebears advanced. Available on ftp.
