This paper discusses the rhythms of writing, the factors that influence these rhythms, and the implications for the design of computer tools to support the writing process. The paper is based on published studies of the dynamics of writing, and on writers' self-reports of the writing process, and it concludes with some suggestions for further, more focused, studies of the rhythms of writing.
