How Much is Enough? A Connectionist Perspective on the Representation Debate

Chris Thornton

The paper looks at the tension between the classical assumption that representation is vital for effective cognition and the relatively recent "reactivist" movement which takes a contrary view. A statistical analysis of cognitive tasks is developed and used to support the argument that purely reactivist approaches cannot hope to deal with anything but the most primitive of domains.
