Since the terms Hypertext and Hypermedia were coined by Ted Nelson in the 1960's they have been used to denote many different things. Although the ideas now associated with these terms can be traced back many decades, it is only since the introduction of powerful workstations and the widespread acceptance of computers in the workplace that have lead to an explosion of interest in hypertext systems.
