This paper shows that symmetry is essential to shape from contour and indicates that existing measures, based on energy and information, are misguided. A new research paradigm: "middle out vision", is proposed as the philosophical foundation of shape from contour. This paper is divided into two parts: the first part establishes the primacy of shape from contour using symmetry from a computational theoretic viewpoint. The second part substantiates the claim by proposing attractive algorithmic solutions to the problem of symmetry finding.
