The semantic structure of noun phrases

Allan Ramsay

This paper proposes an analysis of the way that the constituents of complex noun phrases contribute to their meaning. This analysis shows how the meanings of noun phrases with various kinds of relative clause may be built up strictly compositionally, so that the meaning of a noun phrase can be determined entirely on the basis of the meanings of its parts. The paper sketches a set of rules based on this analysis.
