Generative grammar

Gerald Gazdar

The term "generative grammar" is used to refer to an approach to linguistics which is characterized by the goal of investigating natural language through the construction of (i) mathematical models of (aspects of) particular languages and (ii) a general mathematical framework for building such models. This pedagogic paper presents a set of increasingly complex worked examples (with associated exercises) and surveys the current field.
