Sussex surges into The Times’ top 20 universities
The University of Sussex has surged into the top 20 universities of The Times newspaper's Good University Guide for 2012 - a climb of 21 places in two years.
The latest rise (up seven places to 14th from 21st in 2011) marks Sussex as the biggest climber of any university in the top half of the table.
There are nine Sussex subjects listed in the UK Top 10: American Studies (5th); Anatomy and Physiology (4th); Anthropology (9th); Education (7th); History of Art (5th); Physics (10th); Psychology (6th); Social Work (3rd); and Sociology (9th).
A further 13 subject areas are listed in the top 20: Biological Sciences (16th); Business Studies (20th); Chemistry (12th); Communication and Media Studies (12th); Computer Science (15th); Drama, Dance and Cinematics (11th); English (19th); History (11th); Linguistics (15th); Mathematics (20th); Music (14th); Philosophy (13th); Politics (17th).
The achievement follows on from rapidly improving performances in league tables for 2012 entry published so far: up four places to 11th in the Guardian University Guide for 2012; and 19th in the Independent Complete University Guide.
The University is currently 8th in the UK in the THE World University Rankings.
The Times attributed the rise up the table to improved student satisfaction scores, significant investment in facilities and a better student completion rate. The guide also highlighted innovative student support , including the First Generation Scholars scheme, the Sussex Plus and Postgrad Plus programmes, internships and leadership training.

"These are challenging times for Higher Education, but our strategic ambitions for growth at Sussex [Making the Future] are already having positive impact on the student experience and on the value of a Sussex degree, while our research reputation continues to flourish in an increasingly competitive global sector. We are building on these successes to ensure that Sussex continues to thrive into the 21st century."
