The teaching programme at the Institute of Development Studies is known for its academic excellence. It is strongly research-led, drawing the ongoing work of IDS researchers into the classroom. Our teaching is also enhanced by the wealth of experience that each graduate student brings to the Institute.
Well over a hundred students from around the world, many of whom have previously worked in development, study here. They bring maturity and depth of knowledge from a range of work situations, as well as a grounding in the social sciences. By the time students complete their courses they are well-equipped with the latest theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to further their careers in the field of development and beyond.
Creating a space in which teaching and research live side-by-side, IDS fosters opportunities for students and researchers to learn and share their knowledge and ideas with each other. Our policy of small group teaching also allows students the time to develop their thinking in an informal yet challenging environment.
