Welcome to IDS
The Institute of Development Studies is one of the world's leading organisations for research, teaching and communications on international development. Founded in 1966, the Institute enjoys an international reputation based on the quality of its work and the intellectual rigour with which it applies academic skills to real world policy challenges. Its purpose is to understand and explain the world, and to try to change it - to influence as well as to inform.
Today, IDS hosts six dynamic research programmes, eight popular postgraduate courses, and hosts or contributes to 12 world-class web-based knowledge services which are integrated in a unique combination. As a development knowledge hub, IDS is connected into and is a convenor of networks throughout the world.
IDS is home to around 100 researchers, 40 knowledge services staff, 65 support staff and about 200 students at any one time. But the IDS community extends far beyond, encompassing an extensive network of partners and former staff and students across the development community worldwide.
The research programmes at IDS are organised in six closely linked multidisciplinary teams, and several international, multi-partner research projects are hosted at the Institute. Through collaborative ways of working IDS aims to establish creative and equal partnerships in which research agendas are driven by Southern perspectives.

In all of its work, IDS aims to challenge conventional thinking, to generate fresh ideas that foster new thinking on development policy and practice. Such problem-focused thinking requires a commitment to interdisciplinary, not just across social sciences or even sciences, but across research, communication and learning.
