HSE New Staff Induction
Who should attend?
All new members of staff.
Why attend?
It is a requirement under the University's Health and Safety Policy that all new members of staff receive an induction within 3 months of being in post.
What will the course cover?
This course will be delivered by your local Health & Safety Coordinator (HSC). It will cover:
- the University's responsibilities for health and safety
- your responsibility as a member of staff
- emergency procedures

Your HSC should contact you to arrange a suitable time for your induction, if this does not happen please contact your HSA direct.

Practical Manual Handling
Who should attend?
All members of staff who lift or carry items.
Why attend?
Many staff lift or carry loads as part of their work, ranging from moving furniture to lifting boxes of photocopier paper. This course will teach you how to lift correctly and safely.
What will the course cover?
The course focuses on manual handling hazards, the risks from manual handling, safe lifting techniques and control measures. It includes an element of practical lifting exercises
Practical Manual Handling Refresher
Who should attend?
All staff who have previously attended manual handling training
Why attend?
To refresh skills in assessing manual handling tasks and the stages of manual handling lifting techniques
What will the course cover?
This refresher course gives staff the opportunity to discuss any lifting experiences or concerns in a small group environment, the course reminds delegates of the key points on assessing hazards and risk control taught in the practical manual handling training, and advises on safe lifting/carrying techniques with an opportunity for participants to try them out, a short group exercise will be set to ensure that staff are competent in carrying out dynamic risk assessments.
Display Screen Equipment (DSE) Assessors
Who should attend?
Members of staff who have volunteered or been nominated to assess staff within their school/unit/department.
Why attend?
This course will give you the skills to assist members of staff in the correct set up of their workstations. It will also teach you how to carry out workstation assessments to help prevent work related upper limb disorders (WRULD).
What will the course cover?
The course will cover:
- why we need to carry out VDU assessments
- the ideal workstation setup
- work related upper limb disorders and how to prevent them
- who to assess
- how to carry out an assessment, what to look for and how to record the information
Display Screen Equipment (DSE) Assessor Refresher
Who should attend?
Display Screen Equipment (DSE) Assessors
Why attend?
It is recommended that DSE Assessors attend the refresher training every two years to refresh skills learned on the DSE assessors course and to update any changes in best practice.
What will the course cover?
The course will cover:
- reviewing the ideal workstation setup
- carrying out a VDU Assessment
- changes in best practice
- an informal feedback session with the opportunity to discuss any concerns or issues
Fire Warden Training
Who should attend?
All members of staff who have volunteered or have been nominated to act as a Fire Warden.
Why attend?
To equip yourself with the skills to respond to situations involving fire and emergency evacuation procedures.
What will the course cover?
- How and when to check areas to ensure that people have evacuated
- What to do if people are failing to evacuate
- An overview of the associated University emergency procedures including the role of Security, Rescue Team and Fire Marshals
- The location of their building's "Control" and "Assembly" points
Emergency First Aid at Work
Who should attend?
This course is suitable for anyone who is required to provide first aid in the workplace and needs a basic knowledge of first aid skills.
Why attend?
To gain the skills necessary to act as a first aider in the workplace.
What will the course cover?
The course will cover:
- Managing an emergency
- The role of the first aider
- Caring for a casualty
- Health and safety (first aid) regulations
- Treatment of an unconscious casualty
- Resuscitation

Ladder Safety
Who should attend?
Those who manage staff who use ladders and any individuals who use ladders in the course of their duties.
Why attend?
To understand the causes of falls from heights and to prevent any accidents while working at height.

IOSH Working Safely
This is an Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) accredited course.
Who should attend?
All members of staff.

To understand why you must 'work safely'.

- Introducing Working Safely
- Defining hazard and risk
- Identifying common hazards
- Improving safety
- Protecting our environment
You will receive an IOSH accredited certificate on completion. The charge for this is £30
