Course description

Course outline

This course will introduce a period of momentous social, political and cultural change in British and European history by focusing on some of the key debates that have preoccupied its historians. Historical controversies over events such as British union, the Industrial Revolution, the Enlightenment, and the French Revolution will be examined as an introduction to various historiographical approaches. Central themes such as gender, popular culture, concepts of the state (from absolutism to democracy), socio-structural and demographic change, and empire and nationalism, will also be analysed to introduce a further range of perspectives on the past and issues of continuity and change.
