Biography

I studied French and German at the University of St. Andrews, with philosophy as a minor. Thereafter I took an M.A. in Continental Philosophy and completed my Ph.D on Hegel's Criticism of Kant at the University of Essex. Afterwards I held a post-doctoral fellowship at the Freie Universitaet and studied ancient Greek at the Humboldt University of Berlin. From 1995 to 2004 I was a lecturer in the philosophy department, teaching in Modern European philosophy at the University of York, and was a core member of the School of Poliitics, Economics and Philosophy, before moving to Sussex in October 2004. Where I became part of the core faculty in Social and Political Thought and convenor in 2008 (and director of the Centre for Social and Political Thought) from 2009.

I have been a member of the Executive Committee of the British Philosophical Association from 2004-2012 and was Chair of the Society for European Philosophy until 2011. I am a member of the Programme Committee of  the Forum for European Philosophy, and campaign actively for the humanities and philosophy in Higher Education.

You can find more information about me and my work on my website here.
