Module Outline

9 November is an important German day. Some historians even refer to it as an Schicksalstag (Destiny day) underlining the formative nature of the events that took place on that day to German history. By focusing on some of the 9/11 events during the 20th century, this module will offer an opportunity to study the rise and fall of four Germans states in three different periods.
Our expedition will begin with the November Revolution and declaration of the first German republic in 1918 from where we will follow history to Hitler putsching in Munich 1923, the Kristallnacht pogrom all over Germany in 1938, the student revolt and the attempted bombing of the Jewish community in West Berlin in 1969, and finally the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 all on 9 November.
As a study trip seminar, this module will take us to the places where all of this happened, from Munich to Nuremberg and from there to Leipzig and Berlin. We will explore cities in guided tours, visit Museums and memorial sites, meet German students and have seminars at various locations with a final one-day long student conference at Humboldt University. The excursion will encourage us to think about the importance of locality in history, broach the central question in 20th Century German history, and situate the German experience within a wider European framework.
