Please indicate when booking your tickets what you or your guests require to participate fully in this event e.g. wheelchair access or sign language interpreter. Please note that there are steps down from the stage which graduands would normally descend. If you have any queries about this, please contact Sara Tooth on +44 (0)1273 877015.

Note: Due to limited wheelchair seating available in the Brighton Centre, we can only arrange this for you if we are informed in advance.

What do I wear with my gown?

A graduation ceremony is a formal occasion. Most graduands and guests treat the dress code as if they were attending a wedding. However the University reserves the right to refuse a student to graduate in person if it is deemed their dress is inappropriate, as it may offend other graduands and guests (e.g. beachwear).

If you are stuck for ideas below is a guide of the traditional clothing worn under an academic gown:

Option 1 A dark trouser suit, with a white shirt and dark tie, smart dark shoes
Option 2 A dark skirt suit, with a white shirt/blouse, smart dark shoes
Option 3 Smart trousers with a smart white shirt, smart dark shoes
Option 4 Smart skirt with a smart white blouse, smart dark shoes
Option 5 Dark dress, smart dark shoes
Option 6 National Dress
What is the dress code for guests attending graduation?

As this is a formal occasion, guests are expected to dress smartly (i.e. no jeans, trainers, t-shirts, etc).

Yes. Our official photographers, Ede & Ravenscroft Ltd, will have studios set up in the Brighton Centre. Details of our official photographers’ arrangements can be found on the Ede & Ravenscroft website.

Studio opening times

The photography studios will be open two hours before the start of your ceremony and during the post ceremony drinks reception.

Can I take my own photographs?

Yes, you can take your own photographs within the Brighton Centre including the auditorium. However, we would kindly ask that guests do not move around the auditorium during the ceremony.

Will my prize be presented at the graduation ceremony?

Graduation prizes will be announced at the same time as the award is announced. We do not hand out any prizes on the day; these will be issued separately by the awarding body eg Chair of the Examination Board.

Can you recommend a suitable local hotel?

The University of Sussex has an approved hotels and guest houses list in the Brighton & Hove area.
