Format

The workshop consists of two sessions:

Session 1: International Relations Insights on the Ebola Crisis

This session discusses initial reactions and responses to the current situation from scholars having worked on global health politics from a range of different perspectives. Participants will be asked to prepare short think pieces (2 pages) in preparation of this session, which include both initial thoughts and further questions. Some of the questions we propose to address in this session include:

  • Is the inadequacy of the international response unexpected? And, if so, what have observers missed?
  • Or what warning signs were there, and why were they not (sufficiently) addressed?
  • What do the current crisis and the international response to it tell us about global governance and the global politics of health?

Session 2: An International Relations Response?

This session will identify the key insights and messages from the morning session, and develop the outline of the meeting report.

Furthermore, it will discuss whether these insights should be formulated in form of a policy brief that may feed into the international response and future international pandemic preparedness.

Finally, the session will discuss a proposal to put together a journal special issue analyzing the Ebola crisis and identifying research needs revealed by the crisis. Provided there is interest by the workshop participants, a work plan for these projects will be agreed
