New format for open day proves a success

More than 7,000 visitors were on campus on 16 June 2012 for Sussex's summer open day

Despite poor weather forecasts, the sun shone once again on open day as 7,500 visitors poured onto campus on Saturday (16 June) to find out what Sussex has to offer.

David Winstanley, Head of Undergraduate Student Recruitment, said: “Following consultation and visitor evaluation, we decided to shift the focus of the open day away from Bramber House, moving academic departments into teaching and learning space across campus. This seems to have been a great success, allowing us to grow the capacity of the event, and giving prospective students a better feel of what it might be like to be a student here.

“Colleagues from every part of the University put in a huge amount of effort, and this is reflected in visitor feedback.”

More than 500 visitors have now completed the evaluation survey sent out after the event, and 92% of respondents said that they were “impressed” or “very impressed” with the open day.

Responses to the evaluation included:

  • Cannot wait to apply!
  • The subject talks were well put together and the lecturers were very willing to answer any questions
  • Fantastic university, loved the feel of the campus. Well Done!
  • I thought the university was amazing, everyone attended our needs and responded to our questions.
  • The campus was spotless and very clean, attractive and friendly, and the facilities, especially the library, were very pleasant!

Prospective students also took to social media to talk about the open day and ask questions – more than 150 open day visitors interacted with the University’s main Twitter account (@SussexUni).

Daniella Salvage, Events Manager, said: “Every year we try to continue to improve our events for prospective students, and we look forward to receiving feedback from colleagues across campus on ways we can better serve visitors.”

The next open day will be held on 29 September.
