Performance, Celebrity and Fandom: The Drama of Identity

Module L4038

Module details for 2011 cohort.

30 credits

FHEQ Level 6

Module Outline

The aims of this module are to encourage you to develop a critical awareness of the role of performance in social life, and to reflect on your own experiences of performing identity. It is not only professional actors, musicians and entertainers who perform, but also ordinary people in their everyday lives. If we are all social actors, what are the similarities and differences between performances given on stage and those involved in routine, everyday interaction? The module will draw upon the dramaturgical perspective of Erving Goffman, by examining issues of self-presentation in relation to theatre and the performing arts, rituals and ceremonies, self-identity, gender and sexuality, and collective fandom activities.
