This second year interdisciplinary course centres around issues of culture, power and knowledge in the study of health and development. It draws on perspectives from medical anthropology, medical sociology, public health, cultural psychology, feminist and activist politics and development studies to focus on the relationship between power and knowledge in a variety of historical and contemporary contexts. We especially focus on issues in the construction of medicine, illness, health, science and rationality. We also explore comparative epistemologies and cross-cultural approaches to knowledge, including various religious and belief systems.
By the end of the course, a successful student should be able to:
1. Demonstrate a theoretical understanding of the different social science perspectives on the issues of knowledge and power especially as they relate to medical and religious knowledge systems.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of cross-cultural approaches to knowledge and their application.
3. Demonstrate basic knowledge of the core reading and related range of conceptual issues.
4. Demonstrate the skills to handle material from different disciplinary perspectives in written material and oral presentations.
