Contemporary Coastal Processes

Time series of (click on images to start slide show):
  • Erosion of a small stump of chalk shore platform at Saltdean in the summer of 2001 until January 2002. Also note the changes in the vegetation cover of the shore platform.
  • The slides show seasonal changes in the vegetation of the shoreplatform east of the eastern groyne at the Portobello Treatment Works, Telscombe. Growth is dependent on climatic factors as well as exposure to waves. The groyne protects the vegetated triangle from the main wave direction.
ALso not the change in the position of the lower beach limit and the grain size of the beach material.
  • The shoreplatform from the series above is backed by a bay that features the cliff and cliff fall in the next series. This slide show shows the changes in the beach. The beach is only a few decimentres thick if spread out evenly and temporary longshore movement exposes the relatively steeply sloping shoreplatform beneath. Note also the different distributions of sediment sizes, positions of high water lines and the temporary nature of beach cups.
  • From January 2001 to September 2001 a small rockfall on the beach east of Portobello treatment works was removed by subsequent spring tides in conjunction with high waves. Equinox springtides reach the cliff foot as can be seen in the last slide.
Also not the changes in the beach level and the beach surface material.
  • The sequence of slides shows the movement of the beach toe in the eastern part of the Telscombe beach, west of the Portobello sewage outfall. The beach toe extends and retreats over the shore platform, thereby influencing plant and animal distribution.
  • Images of the beach west of the Portobello outfall at Telscombe have been taken since February 2001. Changes in beach size, surface cover, surface landforms (beach cusps) and the position of berms can be followed over a period of 2 years.
Also not the rock fall in the background seen first in April 2001, which disappeared by the beginning of 2002.
  • This slide show shows the break-up of a larger stump in the shoreplatform at Saltdean. The stump can be seen in the background of the first slide show above. The direction of view is towards the beach.
Note also the change in vegetation cover, the position of the sand/shingle limit on the beach behind and the changing levels on sand on the shore platform.
  • The set of five slides shows the removal of a small sized cliff fall between Saltdean and Telscombe from April 2001 to March 2002. The debris rests on the shingle beach and removal was determined by wave reaching the cliff foot. Consequently, removal took place in the autumn/winter when high spring tides and storm waves could reach the back of the beach.
