As a result of her research on 'lad culture' and sexual violence at British universities, Dr Alison Phipps (Director of Gender Studies, Reader in Sociology) was recently asked to Chair a Westminster Briefing event looking at ways of tackling this issue.
The one-day event, ‘Proactive Approaches to Confronting Sexism and Lad Culture on Campus’, was hosted in central London on Thursday 26 November with around 50 delegates including university managers, student support staff, students' union staff and academics.
Speakers included Rob Behrens (Head of the Office of the Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education), Susuana Amoah (National Women's Officer, NUS), Fiona Waye (Equality and Diversity policy lead, Universities UK), and Maria Miller MP (Chair, Select Committee on Women and Equalities).
Dr Phipps said: "It was a real honour to be asked to chair this event, which was very interesting and productive. Delegates have all been asked to submit evidence to the government's new taskforce on 'lad culture' and violence against women on campus, and we are all planning to keep in touch so we can work together more effectively in future."
