  • The Meeting House celebrates its 40th anniversary. Construction work began in 1965 and it was dedicated in October 1966. It is now a listed building, which means that the government recognises it to be 'of special architectural or historic interest'
  • The Institute of Development Studies (IDS) hosts a series of events to mark its 40th anniversary
  • Around 5,000 prospective students and their families attend the annual autumn Open Day
  • Vice-Chancellor Professor Alasdair Smith announces that he will be stepping down in August 2007, after nine years in the post
  • Oh! What A Lovely War, a classic film made by a young Richard Attenborough and featuring former Sussex students, is released on DVD for the first time
  • Victoria Wood writes and stars in 'Housewife, 49', a wartime TV drama based on one of the Mass Observation diaries held in the Library at Sussex
  • HEFCE figures show that Sussex's action on widening participation continues to make a real difference to the student mix. The University's 2006 undergraduate cohort has the highest ever proportion of black and ethnic-minority students, disabled students and students from lower socio-economic backgrounds, where national benchmarks are exceeded for the first time
  • Two honorary doctorates will be presented at the graduation ceremonies. Professor Robert Chambers, whose work at the IDS has focused on development issues in Asia and Africa, will be made Doctor of Letters. Sussex businessman Michael Chowen, will be made Doctor of the University in recognition for his charity work
  • Students vote Sussex 'Best Place to Be' in a survey of 40 leading UK universities
  • Students at Sussex vote for their union to remain affiliated to the National Union of Students (NUS). An overwhelming majority of students (91.6 per cent) voted to stay with the NUS and only 8.4 per cent wanted to leave
  • The Royal Society elects Professor Geoff Cloke, the a University of Sussex scientist, to one of its prestigious Fellowships
  • The University updates its Smoking Policy to ensure that it complies fully with regulations banning smoking in the workplace and enclosed public places, which come into force on 1 July
  • Three academics are to receive awards at the graduation ceremonies next month in recognition of their excellent teaching: Dr Paul Basu, Dr Darrell Evans, and Cath Holmström
  • The Sussex MSc in Astronomy celebrates its 40th anniversary
