  • Schools and departments are restructured, and a new academic and administrative management structure is introduced
  • The curriculum is redesigned
  • Sussex sees greatly increased applications in a wide range of subjects
  • Stronger and more accessible student support is introduced
  • An ambitious programme of investment and development of the campus begins, starting with the Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS); the first new medical school for 40 years partnered with Brighton University. In October 2002 the Medical School opens and receives 970 applicants for 160 places
  • A new University logo is unveiled
  • Five new schools replace the previous 11: Humanities, Life Sciences, Social Sciences and Cultural Studies; Science and Technology, and the Sussex Institute
  • Humanities includes eight departments: American Studies, Art history, English, History, Sussex Language Institute, Linguistics and English Language, Music, and Philosophy
  • Life Sciences includes four departments: Biochemistry, Biology & Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, and Psychology
  • Social Sciences and Cultural Studies includes six departments: Anthropology, Economics, Geography, International Relations & Politics, Media and Cultural Studies, Sociology, and the Sussex European Institute
  • Science and Technology includes four departments: Engineering & Design, Informatics, Maths, and Physics and Astronomy
  • Sussex Institute includes four departments: CCE, Social Work and Social Care, Law, and Education
  • The Science curriculum is under review, led by new PVC Evelyn Welch
  • A new Conference Centre opens in Bramber House (Refectory Building) in December
  • Project V, the University volunteering initiative, is launched
  • Sussex beats Cambridge in University Challenge but loses to Oxford in the second round
  • Sussex Direct secure web-based information for students and staff is piloted
  • Former Sussex academic professor Anthony Leggett is award the Nobel Prize for Physics. He worked at Sussex from 1967-83
  • Lord Attenborough celebrates his 80th birthday with a private party on campus. The Downs Restaurant is transformed into theatre on the end of the West Pier and there is a World War One theme in acknowledgement of the film Oh! What a Lovely War
