50 years

August 1967 - July 1968

  • There is student unrest in spring/summer 1968. A new working party for disciplinary procedures is set up in its wake
  • Discussions begin for the establishment of a Centre for Continuing Education (CCE), which will take over the role that Oxford began in the East Sussex area. EM Eppel becomes the first Director. Organisation and faculty are to undertake extramural teaching rather than set up a new department. It is planned that CCE will form the University's link with the wider community and will work closely with Southampton in West Sussex
  • A new role for an information officer is set up, to enable the University to communicate with the press and other news media, and to edit official University publications
  • AFRAS moves into Arts C Easter 1968
  • University marks the 50th anniversary of the Russian revolution. All Russian faculty visit the Soviet Union
  • Most students whether undergraduate (UG) or postgraduate (PG) favour living in flats or bedsits. A large number of UGs still live in guesthouses. There is great demand for Park houses but not enough accommodation. Plans to build a student village from 1968-69 are welcomed by students
  • Sir William Walton, guest conductor for the Brighton Festival, is awarded Doctor of Letters at a special ceremony in the Meeting House on 26 April
