Chancellor Lord Shawcross

  • Molecular Sciences (MOLS) Biological Studies (BIOLS) and Engineering and Applied Science (EAPS) schools open
  • Fulton is to step down as Vice-Chancellor (VC) at the end of 1966-67 and is made a life peer. Asa Briggs is to replace him
  • In April 1966 the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) is now on campus as a University research centre in partnership with the Ministry of Overseas Development. IDS in an autonomous body
  • There are worries that sixth-form colleges are moving away from the sciences to the arts despite the calls in the Robins Report for the need for more trained scientists and concerns are expressed over the implications this has for universities (and the country more generally)
  • Prince Philip visits the University to meet scientists
  • Experiments are held with student teachers spending time in schools: three days per week throughout the year
  • Discussions to set up a degree in nursing begin
  • The School of Education Studies and the Women's Group set up Falmer Nursery Group January 1966. It runs mornings only in term time for children from University families. Students observe the children at play through a one-way observation screen
  • English and American Studies (ENGAM) offers two new majors: Sociology and Politics
  • Social Studies offers a new degree in Social Psychology and a new major in Law is mooted for 1967-68
  • The Schools of BIOLS and APPS begin
  • Graduate studies is increasing rapidly, especially in the sciences. Twenty new MA programmes begin in arts subjects. Numbers of research students are also increasing
  • The University Computing Centre is established in July 1965
  • Work begins on the Arts Centre, with Sir Basil Spence as architect. Until then, exhibitions are organised in temporary buildings, including an exhibition by local artist Harvey Daniels, and musical recitals are performed
  • The Centre for Academic Services is established for a/v services throughout the University
  • Students prefer to live in flats or Park houses rather than guest houses or lodgings. Lancaster House is added to Park houses
  • The Students' Union plans to open a coffee bar in Brighton
  • The Union opens a President's Appeal Fund to help students with financial needs, which supplements the VC's fund. Some of the money raised is sent to students at the University of Basutoland
  • Honorary degrees are awarded to Yehudi Menuhin and Harold Wilson among others
  • Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) is established in January 1966
