- The first Senate is held, comprising eight members: Vice-Chancellor Prof JS Fulton, Prof A Briggs, Prof J P Corbett, Prof D Daiches, Prof RJM Wight, D Cox, S. John & Dr A M Ross
- The Second Senate meeting sets up three schools of study: English Studies, comprising English and History; European Studies, comprising History, French, German, Economics and Philosophy; and Social Studies, comprising History, Philosophy and Economics
- Four science professors are appointed to set up the Science Programme
- A total of 44 academics, eight administrative assistants and five clerical staff are appointed • Stanmer House is the main administrative centre
- Prefabs are erected for tutorials
- Knoyle Hall used for lectures • Undergraduates are mainly lodged in the Preston Park area
- The University motto is adopted: ‘Be Still and Know’
- 12 houses in Kingston are purchased to accommodate faculty
