- Plans are underway for the Library and College House to be completed end of 1961; the teaching wing of Arts Building October to complete in 1963; the Library to complete in early 1964; and the chemistry and engineering buildings to complete by October 1963
- From the start there are problems with spiraling costs and more money is required from the Universities Grants Committee (UGC)
- The first residences (for 100 students) are planned for October 1964
- Plans for the sports fields are also underway
- A public appeal is launched for £500,000 for students’ residences and other building and equipment. This achieved within the year partly because T Lyddon Gardner and H Samuel each make a large individual donation of £100,000
- Many people and organisations donate books for the Library
- Fifty-two students are admitted for the first year: 17 men and 35 women, largely from London, the Home Counties and Sussex. Fees are £55 including Students’ Union membership
