There weren't many other people like me who were black British. The people I met were international students from Jamaica, from Africa, from other parts of the Caribbean. So I got involved in SASA which was the Sussex African Students Association, which was sort of a meeting point for people who were black. But there were contradictions there because people of colour who were from Sri Lanka who wanted to be with other people of colour couldn't actually be part of SASA because they weren't African. There were all sorts of interesting discussion about who to include and who to let in. But I remember being quite involved in SASA; being involved in the social events; being in the kitchen helping to cook dinners and buffets for socials that we had.
