Full Module Description

- Partnerships for positive outcomes for service users and carers. The inter-professional practice context of community care: the Health Act 1999, Health and Social Care Act 2001
- Key practice guidance: the National Service Framework for Mental Health, the National Service Framework for Older People, Valuing People, the New Strategy for Learning Disability.
- Key statutory duties and powers in relation to assessment, support and protection under Mental Health Act 1983, NHS and Community Care Act 1990, Carers(Recognition and Services) Act 1995. Values when working with involuntary users of services.
- The process and different models of care management. Partnership working, person centred care planning, assertive outreach and direct payments. Effective communication skills and engaging with and managing conflict and ambiguity in complex networks;
- Psycho-social model of mental health and social models of disability and older age. Oppressions and values in community care, including normalisation and social role valorisation. Service user/ carer perspectives and research evidence.
- Assessing and managing situations of risk and adult protection

Formative Assessment
Small group preparation and presentation of the response to a specific aspect of the Assessment, Decision Making and Planning Study (see below).

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module, successful students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the roles and tasks of social workers, by describing accurately the nature and dimensions of these aspects, in relation to mental health, disability and older people and of the inter-professional framework that underpins effective practice
2. Critically appraise theoretical and conceptual perspectives and appropriate sources of research evidence in order to inform effective assessment, decision-making and intervention in mental health, disability and older people's services.
3. Explain how social work values can be used to underpin effective and ethical practice in relation to to mental health, disability and older people.
4. Demonstrate awareness, by discussion in an informed way in the final assessment, of the way in which complex emotional and systemic dynamics can affect judgement and decision-making in situations of conflict and ambiguity, and make suggestions as to how these are best managed

Module Outline

This module is concerned with the consolidation and development of students' understanding of the social work role and process in relation to specific groups of service users and carers. It examines both core legislative and practice guidance in the relevant areas, together with the key inter-professional context. Service users/ carers and other professionals will be involved in teaching. As well as embracing the notion of partnership working with service users/ carers and other professionals, the module also examines the conflicts and tensions that can arise when working with situations of risk and with involuntary service users, and considers the impact of this upon the worker and how to maintain sound and effective practice in such situations.
